VANCOUVER -- “I wanted to do something completely mad,” Langley-based musician and artist John Lee says.

And there certainly is something a little bit kooky about a nine-foot-tall, 40-foot-wide wall of speakers (168 of them to be exact) able to channel 2,000 watts of power, a Web-interaction-enabled beast dubbed “the largest guitar and audio amplifier in the world.”

Even crazier: How about setting the whole thing up in the middle of Granville Street and letting it rip?

Lee, who lived and worked in Europe for several years and is better known for his musical contributions to a wide variety of television shows including CSI, Desperate Housewives, The Simpsons and the Super Bowl, created the “Wailing Wall of Sound” during a recent stay in France.

The monstrous piece of gear will be displayed in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday and at the W2 Storyeum in Gastown on Friday August 13 as part of the Surge Festival.

The wall, which Lee made by hand and completed in 2008, will be used to showcase music by his band, B-Monster, as well as local DJs and other sound bites and musical bits submitted by Vancouverites in mp3 format (details at wailingwallofsound.com). Visitors will also be able to experiment with pre-recorded tracks using a theremin and percussion.

“I’m trying to promote other people’s ideas in this as well,” Lee says of the Wall’s interactive Web component. “It really can be simple stuff: The sound of your kitchen on your iPhone. If it’s a song, just record something short and simple about a chair or something — just to try and change things up a bit. It doesn’t matter what it is; just do something.”

The exhibit, part art installation, part musical project, is meant to be an interactive exploration of sound on a whole new scale.

“I just got a really good deal on speakers,” Lee says, “and the more I bought, the cheaper it got. The wall cost probably less than some drummers’ drum kits. I bought all the wood at a local Home Depot-type place in France and built it over three months. I had no woodworking skills whatsoever but I know how to wire speakers. It just became something crazy.”

He laughs.

“It’s not this thing where it’s just piles of Marshall stacks everywhere,” he adds. “Why not do something that is homemade, completely over-the-top and that people can get involved with as well?”

Though the sheer power of the Wall could easily scare a few people, Lee says volume usually is not pushed all the way to the max.

For a regular concert, the Wall will be set at “normal gig level” — in most cases, it doesn’t even fit on a small club stage — and Lee had to ensure he got the proper insurance and permits to showcase the wall in the middle of downtown Vancouver.

“It definitely goes loud, but it’s not a piercing thing; it won’t hurt anybody’s ears,” Lee says, adding it’s more about the “rumble” effect when the bass kicks in.

The Wall, which was recently showcased at the Berlin Wall Festival in Germany, could become a touring attraction, Lee says.

In the works: a possible appearance at the Rio Theatre and other alternative and art spaces, as well as, perhaps, a trek down to Seattle for an appearance at the Jimi Hendrix Museum, though Lee cannot confirm anything just yet.

“When people see me putting it together, they run off and they bring friends back,” he adds with a laugh. “And then we get everybody to sign the back of the wall — it becomes this art thing.”

1. When did the band take shape?


The band was formed in 2008. We have all been in bands before, Kkeeping Pace with Planes and Out Of The Ashes. When they folded Latina Heat was formed.

2. Where did the band's name come from?


A group called the Messenger had a single 'Latina Heat' and after seeing the video on MTV thought it was a cool name?

3. Who are your major influences?

You Me At Six and Justin Timberlake are major infulances, it would be great if we could achive half whar these guys have.

4. Where do you get ideas for songs?

Life experiences, the average age of the band is 19 we are all on low paid wages and spend hours with our acoustic guitars just playing with cords and jotting down lyrics, cheap entertainment I guess (sad I know). Cal is the main influence well supported by Rich and Craig.

5. What does the future hold for Latina Heat?


We are starting to get recogniesed now and look forward to gigs at Birmingham O2 Accadamy and Camden Byfly London. Our first aim is to support a big name like You Me At Six. Glastonbury would be awesome man!!I

Precedently all the members of Ungrace were a part of an unrealized project, but it gave the basis for a new band where all members have a sense of understanding and cooperation. They have just abolished from negative and wiped the slate clean.
All these factors multiplied by creative efficiency and individuality of each member of the band have led to the record of their 1st LP consisting of 10 track in December, 2009.

Nathaniel Sutton is a very talented artist,capturing the moment of an hour glass that is half-full.I guess what I'm trying to say not many people can put together a album that sounds like a fullblown band.

Sutton's new release "Starlite" on Oak Apple Records
is very strong from the openig track "Starlite" to the closing "Photo Finish".My personal favorite on this cd was "Five Years Later".
Myself I am into the harder side of music,but I caught myself listening all the way through.Oh and yes it has made it into the my cars cd player a several times!
A touch of 80's.90's and todays sound are what I believe infunces this guy.
What makes this cd unique is that Nathaniel Sutton play all the insturments from Guitars,Pianos,Drums ,Harmonica and Synth.
He also recorded ,mixed,and produced it in his home in Alberta.

The Yellow Dogs Bio:

The Yellow Dogs is an iranian underground indie rock band which formed back in 2006 in Tehran by Looloosh(guitar/synth) and Koori(bass) and Zina(drums).They built a closet size practicing room on roof top of Zina's house by their own hands.They sound proofed the room for not bothering the nieghbours and to not be founded by goverment agents.They called it Sag Dooni
which is Farsi for dog house.
After a few months they founded Obaash(vocal/guitar),and they started to make music and finding their own style which is a wierd combination but their main influences are,Joy Division,MGMt,Modest Mouse,Interpol,Foals,Moving Units,The Coral,The Rapture and etc.
Playing live concerts had always been like a dream for them,becuz Iranian goverment illegelized western music and they didn't allow them to play in public places,so they decided to ignor the islamic law and do what they loved to do.
In summer of 2007 they came together with their close friends Free Keys which is an iranian prog rock trio to prepared a whole garage/basement with capacity of 200 person for throwing underground concerts.7 members of the both bands put their own money together and sound proofed the whole place by their own hands,they also made a stage and found a genius lightman .The result was 2 mind bending concerts.That experience was unique because 90% of the people who attended in those gigs have never been to a real rock concert,with light shows,and a huge space for dancing and jummping around.The atmosphere was like early Sex Pistols concerts,or maybe san fransico's psychedelic rock concerts in 1967.
In 2008 they played an importent rule in a film about underground music scene in Iran directed by iranian award winning director Bahman Ghobadi which called "Nobody Knows About Persian Cats".They played one of their songs called "New Century" in their practing room.The film rewarded in Festivals De Canne 2009,in section of "Un Certain Regard".
They were invited to perform in SXSW 2009,but becuz of problems with getting visas they missed that oppertunity,now they are recording their first EPK and getting ready for 2010 because it's going to be a busy year for them.
The Yellow Dogs remains on of the most active underground bands in Iran,their courage of doing what they love to do with out thinking about authorities put them on the center of underground avant garde music scene in Tehran.
